How MWA got involved:

There are several small towns along the Musconetcong River with older houses, a fairly high density, and residents and businesses are served by septic systems and cesspools. Because of the geology of the area, bacteria from leaking or poory maintained septic systems may enter the drinking water supply, or be carried into the river by storms.

In 2014, the MWA received a grant from the William Penn Foundation to design and promote a septic system education program to include drinking water sampling to qualified residents.

Sample collection and testing will be performed by New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection-certified QC Laboratories of Pennsylvania.

This project aims to reduce the human contribution of bacteria to the river or groundwater by helping residents understand the importance of septic system maintenance.
