About the event

Join the Musconetcong Watershed Association for a flatwater paddling trip on Cranberry Lake in Byram Township on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 10:30a.m.

Cranberry Lake, while not part of the mainstem of the Musconetcong River, sits within its watershed boundary and has much of the same beauty as the other waterbodies in the region.  And, like many other Musconetcong Watershed Lakes, it was expanded to its current size during the 19th century to provide extra water for the Morris Canal.  As the Canal operations ceased, it paved the way for the development of the lake as a resort destination.  Learn about the current conditions of the lake today, and what sort of efforts are ongoing to monitor and address the water quality of this valuable waterbody.

If you're looking for a paddling outing more subdued than the swift waters of the undammed sections of the Musconetcong, this approximately two-hour trip would fulfill that and help connect you more deeply to this wonderful treasure and the requirements for ensuring its continued thriving.

As a safety precaution, life vests are required to participate in this paddling trip.  We have a limited number of kayaks and life vests available for use on a first-come, first-served basis, so beginners are welcome as long as you are able to swim.  If you require a kayak and life vest to participate, please register as soon as you know you want to come and email Ryan Jiorle at ryan@musconetcong.org to request what you need.  We also request anyone borrowing equipment from us arrive at 10a.m. so we can assign you what you need.  If you have your own equipment, please arrive at 10:15.

We will meet at the Cranberry Lake public launch on the east side of the lake, with a goal of departing at 10:30a.m.  While there's no dedicated street address for this location, you can find a Google Maps link for that parking area here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/JUm6oKshheGjU2cm8.  It is accessed via South Shore Rd and the Sussex Branch Trail.  Please note the parking area is located a short walk away, although you're welcome to drop your kayak off at the public launch before parking: https://maps.app.goo.gl/9ran4c9Mw7XtB7Ho9.

Please note, there is a Porta Potty near the boat ramp, but no other dedicated bathroom.

There is a suggested donation of $20 to participate in this event.  You may bring donations with you on the 14th, or you can also donate online here.

Space is limited and registration is required. When filling out the form, please only register one person at a time.    If you have any questions, please contact Ryan Jiorle at ryan@musconetcong.org Learn more about the Great Waters NJ initiative: www.greatwatersnj.org
